JackassPenguinShow
Named after a species of penguin, with succinct jazziness, catchy melodies, elements of easy-listening and '80s tv themes, inventive harmonic ideas and quirkiness, influenced by a wide range of jazz-fusion artists (Weather Report, UZEB, Bob James, Yellowjackets, Chick Corea, Carla Bley, Paul Winter, Thelonious Monk), The Jackass-Penguin Show are a virtual instrumental band formed in Limerick, Ireland by the keyboardist/composer/podcaster Igal Gabbay.
The Jackass-Penguin Show's 2009 début EP Egg recruited a group of musicians playing saxophone, guitar, drums and fretless bass to record seven of their favourite tunes by Gabbay. One of the tracks on the album, the mellow bluesy Mudbank of Liberty, was played on RTE Lyric FM, Ireland's national classical music and arts radio station. An earlier track titled Help Is On Its Way was also played on the same station.
Another early track, the rather quirky and waltzy Frogs in the Seine was placed on the soundtrack of Behind the Scenes of Total Hell: The Jamie Gunn Chronicles, a 2009 British independent feature film directed by Andy Wilton and produced by Once Upon A Tyne Productions.
The Jackass-Penguin Show's funky keyboard playing has been heard on podcasts all over the world, including The Pink Water podcast (Canada), Braincast (Germany), Pirates Week (US), Marvel Noise (US), Tara Channel (Japan), MobileRadio (Hong Kong). Both Migraine in the Desert and a specially adapted version called Migraine in Space have been used as the opening theme on more than 300 episodes of Michael Angel's Cosmic Grab Bag podcast and counting. In 2012, theme and incidental music by the Jackass-Penguin Show is going to be enjoyed by listeners of an upcoming Australian comedy-drama produced by the same people behind The Doctor Who Podcast. Music by the JPS has also been used by online videomakers, for example the NYC Pizza Adventure.
